Welcome to Music!
The Core Knowledge Program at Palmetto Prep allows students to explore the many different areas of music including theory and composition, history, and creative musical performances including both improvisation and rehearsed pieces. We use core elements of music such as pitch, rhythm, form, melody, harmony, timbre, and dynamics on a daily basis. Palmetto Prep students learn through experiencing and playing music, as well as listening to it actively.
Has your child been singing the same songs over and over again? We are rehearsing for our new musical revue, Destination: America!

What We’re Working On: March 1st-5th
2nd-5th Grades: We are working on learning the pitches, rhythms, and words of our MoTown and Country songs this week. Students are also learning their harmony and melody parts, working to sing harmonic intervals in tune. We have also begun trying on costumes! Thanks to Gray and Drequan for bringing in some “gangster” costume pieces, Cassidy for her flapper dress, and Karina for her pink country western hat!
1st Grade: First Grade is working on the words, pitches, and rhythms of “It’s American as Rock n’ Roll,” a fun 1950’s rock song. The students are also working on delivering their lines with expression and clear enunciation.
Kindergarten: This week, Kindergarten is continuing to work on “Destination: America” and singing in a good head tone. We are also practicing matching pitch and blending our voices together.
Preschool: The Preschool students are studying composer Jacques Offenbach and the “Can-Can” this week. Offenbach’s theater in Paris was known for its comedies, and his music reflects that in its bouncy, fun nature. This particular can-can is from his work, Orpheus in the Underworld. Students are moving creatively to the music, copying its rhythm patterns on percussion instruments, and following its melody with scarves and other creative movement props.
“Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent.”
-Victor Hugo
